Some of the most incredible weather in the world occurs in the southern plains of the United States each spring. I feel fortunate to live in this part of the country because of my fascination with storms and the unusual weather they produce.
As a child, I remember being afraid when a loud clap of thunder cracked unexpectedly as the wind howled outside when a severe thunderstorm moved into our hometown in north Texas. That fear evolved into an appreciation and awe for such |
things as the beauty of a storm tower at sunset or of the ever-changing lightning display of a distant nighttime thunderstorm in the summer. My interest in photograpy and videography sparked during my college years. Later, I got involved as a storm spotter with our local Skywarn network in Tarrant County, Texas. And so, stormchasing became a logical next step in my desire to experience and record unusual weather events.
We had our first "long distance" chase to the Texas panhandle on May 25, 1996 and were initiated to the possible hazards of the hobby by getting pummeled with baseball-size hail from a vicious storm southeast of Lubbock. We lost a windshield that evening. Nevertheless, we were not dissuaded and continue our search each year for supercell storms and tornadoes. The purpose of this website is to enable those with an interest in severe weather a convenient way of obtaining my documentaries. These video presentations are not produced commercially, but by a stormchaser with a stormchaser's perspective. Video sequences provides a front seat view as each chase day unfolds, providing an account of the day's events. Shot with a high-quality camcorder with tripoded footage, the viewer is treated to stunning storm imagery, including beautiful cloud features and tornadoes. Titles/captions/text are interspersed throughout each video providing time and location information as well as National Weather Service warnings as they occur. Menus are provided in each DVD for easy navigation. Matthew Starkey |
